Australian Cedar extension table circa 1880

A table I recently finished. An Australian Cedar 2 leaf extension table. This piece required a full restoration. The photos below illustrate the process. The table was completely taken apart then the existing finish was washed back. The turned legs were put in the wood lath to wash off the old polish, the open grain of the cedar was filled with pigmented plaster of paris and then they were French Polished in the lath. The solid cedar top were re-joined and re-fitted, grained filled with plaster, (a traditional technique used on open grained timbers) then French Polished to a Full bodied finish. Cedar always polished up nicely and the customers were very happy with the restored table.
